This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on both during out of possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop attacking confidence and defensive reactions in U8 players through a competitive numbers-based small-sided soccer game.
Set up a 20x25 yard area with two mini-goals. Split players into two teams standing on opposite sidelines. Assign each player a number. The coach calls out: - “1” → 1v1 - “1 and 2” → 2v2 - “1, 2, 3” → 3v3 Coach serves a ball into the field and the called players compete to score. Play until goal or ball goes out.
15 minutes
1. Normal goals = 1 point. 2. If ball goes out, play ends. 3. Quick reset between rounds. 4. Encourage fast reactions.
The random call-out format builds reaction speed and competitiveness. Encourage quick transitions from defense to attack. This activity works well in the middle of a session to raise intensity before finishing with free play.
