This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on attacking during in possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop close control and 1v1 attacking decision-making in U8 players through a controlled soccer drill focused on disguise and timing.
Players work in pairs inside a 15x15 yard area. The attacker starts with the ball. The defender begins on the opposite side of a central dividing line. The attacker attempts to beat the defender and dribble into either target box under control. The defender must initially stay behind the dividing line and delay. They are allowed to cross the line once to attempt to win the ball. If the attacker escapes the defender’s attempt and reaches a target box under control, the repetition ends. If the defender wins the ball, the repetition ends immediately. Rotate pairs every 3-4 repetitions.
20 minutes
• Defender may cross the line only once per repetition. • Once the defender commits, they are fully live. • Attacker must maintain control inside the box. • Ball must remain inside the grid.
Many young players panic when pressure arrives. This activity trains patience before committing to a move. Encourage creativity and body feints. Use this drill before progressing into small-sided games where players must beat defenders in realistic scenarios.
