This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on attacking during in possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop decision-making in U8 players through a 1v1 soccer drill that challenges players to choose between shooting and dribbling into space.
Set up a 15x20 yard area. Place one mini-goal, and one coned gate at either end. Players work in pairs. On the coach’s signal, the attacker moves to receive the ball from the coach, at which point the defender is live. The attacker must decide whether to beat the defender and: - Score in the mini-goal, or - Dribble under control through the gate. If the defender wins the ball, they become the attacker. Rotate roles every repetition.
15 minutes
1. Mini goal = 1 point. 2. Controlled dribble through gate = 1 point. 3. Ball must remain inside grid. 4. Quick restarts after each rep.
Young players often pre-decide whether to shoot or dribble. This drill teaches them to read the defender before acting. Emphasize composure and acceleration after the move. Use it mid-session once players are warmed up and confident in 1v1 situations.
