This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on attacking during in possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop close control and turning skills in U8 players through a high-repetition dribbling soccer drill focused on acceleration after the move.
Set up a 20x15 yard grid. Create several cone “stations” inside the area (single cones or small gates). Each player has a ball. Players dribble freely inside the grid. On the coach’s signal, they must perform a specific turn or change of direction move at the nearest cone before accelerating into new space. Rotate through different moves every 60–90 seconds.
10 minutes
1. Players must perform a turn at a cone before moving to another. 2. No standing still. 3. Keep head up to avoid collisions.
Turning ability separates confident attackers from hesitant ones at U8. Encourage sharp, explosive movements rather than slow mechanical turns. This drill works best early in the session before adding defenders or competitive elements.
