This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on both during in possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop attacking confidence in U8 players through a 3v3 small-sided soccer game that rewards 1v1 dribbling and forward play.
Set up a 25x20 yard field with two small goals at each end - minimum 12yds apart. Divide players into two teams of three (3v3). If you have extra players, rotate teams every 2–3 minutes. Play normal 3v3 rules with no goalkeepers. Before starting, explain the “dribble bonus” rule (see below).
20 minutes
1. Normal goal = 1 point. 2. If a player beats a defender off the dribble before scoring, the goal counts as 2 points. 3. Encourage quick restarts to keep tempo high. 4. No punting or long clearances — build through the field.
In small-sided games, players often pass too early to avoid risk. The dribble bonus shifts the mindset toward attacking defenders with confidence. Keep coaching minimal and allow players to solve problems independently. Excellent as a main activity in an attacking-focused session.
