This soccer training activity is designed for U8–U10 players and focuses on attacking during in possession. Coaches can duplicate and adapt this activity to fit their own session plans.
Develop 1v1 attacking speed and confidence in U8 players through a competitive gate-based soccer drill that emphasizes acceleration and change of direction.
Set up a 20x20 yard area with 6–8 small cone gates (2 yards wide) scattered randomly inside the grid. Players work in pairs. Each pair shares one ball. The attacker starts with the ball. The defender begins one yard behind and slightly to the side of the attacker. On the coach’s signal, the attacker attempts to dribble through any gate under control. The defender tries to apply pressure and win the ball before the attacker reaches a gate. Rotate roles every repetition. Play in short competitive rounds (60–90 seconds).
20 minutes
1. A point is scored when the attacker dribbles through a gate under control. 2. The defender becomes the attacker immediately if they win the ball. 3. The ball must stay inside the grid. 4. Players cannot use the same gate twice in a row.
This 1v1 soccer drill is particularly effective for U8 players who need repetition in beating a defender and attacking space with confidence. Coaches often see hesitation in young players during 1v1 situations — this activity removes that fear through repetition and competition. Use this drill early in the season to build bravery, or mid-season to reinforce explosive attacking habits.
